ROWLEY, MA – On Sunday Oct. 15, 2006 Muddy Creek Animal Care Center hosted its first annual Dogtoberfest. Ticket sales indicated that as many as 200 residents
and their dogs showed up for the day’s fun & festivities, with at least one from as far away as Fall River.
Judging by the smiles, the laughter and the tail wagging, the day was a tremendous success. Absolutely everyone, volunteers and frazzled event planners included, are looking forward to Dogtoberfest 2007!
Events for owners & their dogs to participate in included a raffle, bobbing for hot dogs, tennis ball chasing, best dog trick, best costume and pet-owner look-a-like contests.
Proceeds from the event are to be donated to Canines for Disabled Kids, a Massachusetts charity headquartered in Princeton. Kristen Law, Director for Canines for Disabled Kids was on hand all day to give demonstrations and raise awareness for the excellent work her non-profit does in providing disabled children with hearing & traditional service dogs.
We are additionally grateful to all of our wonderful sponsors and volunteers who helped make the day such a howling success. Merial generously donated the cost of refreshments, while Novartis, Fort Dodge, Panera, PCI, Schering-Plough, Webster Veterinary, Ultimate Perk, Wiggles & Jiggles Pet Massage, Absolutely Canine Photography, and Hill’s donated a combination of prizes, freebies and useful information.
The weather held up and it was a glorious fall day full of joy and laughter and prizes. It gives us great pleasure at Muddy Creek Animal Care Center and InTown Veterinary Group, to have played a role in creating a community event bringing families, friends and their beloved pets all together in one place. That the day’s events will further enrich the lives of disabled children is icing on an otherwise extremely entertaining day.

About Canines For Disabled Kids
Canines for Disabled Kids began in 1998 as a natural offshoot of the NEADS assistance dog program. Very few assistance dog programs are willing to provide trained assistance dogs for children under age 12; CDK saw a need and worked to fill it. It was possible to train dogs to help autistic children, children with hearing other physical disabilities and disabled children in the classrooms. In an effort to enhance the education and independence of children with disabilities across the USA, we started to sponsor dogs that would work with the child but with the aid of a parent. CDK has sponsored over 90 assistance dogs, dogs that can help children with different disabilities with their parents as facilitators, since 1998.
