Current Concepts in Pain Management

This two-hour CE approved lecture discusses the pathophysiology of pain, current thoughts on pain transmission and evaluating pain in nonverbal patients.  Emphasis will be on the clinical recognition of pain in dogs and cats, local anesthetic techniques and other pain management protocols.

Two identical sessions will be offered with a maximum attendance of 25 individuals at each session. Lecture by Dr. Lisa Corti, followed by three simultaneous demonstration sessions to include the underwater treadmill, balance boards, cavaletti rails, stretching, low level laser, therapy balls and massage.

Challenging Wounds & Straight Forward Skin Reconstruction

This lecture will focus on management of complex wounds (traumatic and iatrogenic) in dogs and cats.  Topics will cover initial wound management with an emphasis on appropriate and novel wound management techniques to prepare a patient in a timely manner for surgical reconstruction.  The second half of the lecture will focus on standard and novel wound reconstruction techniques.

The lecture will focus on new diagnostic tests for congestive heart failure including the NT-proBNP test that is about to come on the market and newer treatments for congestive heart failure.

Lactate Physiology and Clinical Applications

Presented by Sarah E. Allen, DVM, DACVECC

Lactic acidosis most commonly occurs as a result of tissue hypoperfusion  and hypoxia that can occur with shock, sepsis, severe anemia and respiratory distress. Extensive research in humans has found lactate useful for assessing severity of illness and monitoring response to therapy. Although limited, veterinary research shows promise for the use of lactate monitoring in small animals.
